Cotswold cottage-like profile nested in a mountain meadow
Almost-heaven-- by owner real estate listing! This charming historic home enjoys a stunning setting in a mountain meadow with expansive lawns and gardens and views toward Washington, D.C.
Originally a 1776 log cabin, it was expanded in 1998 into a magical country home of over 3000 sq ft. but very much in keeping with its original vibe. If you love beautiful natural surroundings, tasteful and comfortable rooms laid out for privacy and views, look no further. The spring fed swimming pond is a dream. The well water is wonderful. Acres of woods surround and shelter birds and wildlife. A 2-story stone barn, a spring house, a garden shed and a 2- story garage are all at hand. A home place where you can truly live in nature and on the land, just minutes to anything you want or need, with all modern conveniences-- wired and wonderful.
Spacious sprawling 4 bath home with up to 4 bedrooms nestled into the mountainside on 3 levels. The original cabin is a spacious 23 ft living room with enormous stone hearth fireplace, original beams and wide old growth wood floors. The 16 ft kitchen has every convenience, space for 2 chefs as well as seating for a few guests to chat while meals are prepared. The formal Dining Room has an original stone wall, lots of windows and skylights for daytime and lit garden views for evening. A sunny Morning Room doubles as a music room or second entertaining room-- again with beautiful long eastern views. A steep stair leads to a light- filled king bedroom and small bath which open to a large roof deck with forever views, the morning sunrise and a night sky of stars.
There's more! A 15 sq ft original stone room is now a Library flanked with built- in bookshelves, a wood burning fireplace with glass door and a vaulted ceiling. It too has a view! Adjacent is the home office with space for 2 desk areas, filing cabinets and a private entrance to outside patio and boxwood fountain garden.
Further, down a few steps is the addition to these original areas including Two full baths, a sleeping loft with an opening skylight, a hall and door to the private master bedroom suite. Reclining in a king bed the overhead skylight offers a star filled sky view. A large picture window provides a forest view and more windows and glass door lead to a private deck area for lazing in a hammock and enjoying the pool and valley views.
On the ground floor is a series of rooms which can serve as a little apartment with demonstrated income potential (over 2k in September 2019) or added bedrooms. It includes a king bedroom and a single bedroom connected by a small hall bath, a kitchenette and laundry room. It has a private entrance.
The showpiece of this beautifully situated home is the gorgeous natural swimming pond and waterfall fed by a perennial spring around which the history of the house developed. Enough cut wood for years of fireside comfort, delicious water, amazing 60 mile views, expansive lawns, gardens and woods and hundreds of years of history make Greenspring a quintessential home place.

History of Greenspring:
Wealthy colonial planters received land grants from Lord Fairfax, with the requirement that they settle people on the land. The house began in the 1770s as a settler's log cabin— now Greenspring Cabin— on land belonging to James River planter, Philip Ludwell and later to his daughter, Lucy Ludwell Paradise and then to her daughter Portia and others down the line. The property included 150 acres and a perennial spring and was known, apparently, as “The Revolutionary House.”
Property in forest management, a voluntary program that provides significant tax relief. Current owner will retain a portion of the property and subdivide the remainder to the purchaser. Additional acreage is $35,000 per acre.
